Gulf monarchies back Afwerki's efforts to mediate between the regime and the parties

In recent weeks, the chairman of the Sudanese Sovereign Base Council Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has twice received delegations from Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki.

The Eritrean president is playing an active mediatory role in Khartoum between Sovereignty Council chairman General al-Burhan and the parties which refuse to recognise his regime. He is getting support behind the scenes from Saudi Arabia and the UAE, which are concerned to see al-Burhan increasingly recruiting former officials of the al-Bashir regime.
