Online betting explosion leaves Africa's casinos for dust

Thanks to the widespread availability of mobile payments in Africa, online betting is developing fast all over the continent and competing with the gaming clubs which brought fame and fortune to a handful of European entrepreneurs there in the 1980s and 1990s. When they are not themselves gaming club owners or backers, Africa's new gambling supremos rely on the continent's business and sporting elites to promote their wares to the betting public.

Set up in 2017, Nigerian online betting site BetKing sprung a new surprise on the sporting world on 5 December when it announced it was to be the official sponsor of the Ethiopian football Premier League, now called the BetKing Premier League.
