William Ruto is uneasy about the financial and symbolic weight that the families of Kenya's former leaders carry, and is keen to diminish their power. Numerous political heirs and leaders feature on his list of targets, including Uhuru Kenyatta but especially, Gideon Moi.

Comoros President Azali Assoumani, who is about to take the helm of the pan-African institution, risks coming under pressure from states that have traditionally been a friend to his archipelago nation. Rwanda, Morocco, DR Congo and France will all be jockeying for advantage from his chairmanship of the African Union.
