Zandé militiamen in the southeast of the Central African Republic revolted against Russian paramilitaries over violence meted out during a training session, prompting concern in Bangui and at the UN over an uptick in tensions in the strategic and resource-rich border region.

The Kenyan former opposition leader is selecting his main allies in West and Central Africa with a view to securing the support of states in the region. The divisions between candidates and French-speaking countries could work in his favour.
