Launched several months ago amid a climate of acute mistrust, conciliation efforts by US diplomats to build closer ties with Bamako have not been without difficulties. While supporting the Malian junta, the Trump administration is exploring other options and cultivating a very discreet channel of communication with the opposition.

Since his return to power a year ago, the Ghanaian president has stepped up overtures to France. From offers to mediate with Sahelian juntas to signals aimed at French business circles, Accra is carefully managing its position between an assertive sovereigntist line and balanced diplomacy.
