No sooner had William Ruto's victory in the 9 August presidential election been declared than there was an unexpected division in the Electoral Commission, part of which refused to recognise the results. This split is now at the heart of several appeals at the Supreme Court.

The continent's finance, economy, environment and development ministers have been invited for talks in Sharm el-Sheikh from 8 to 9 September to find a common position ahead of the COP27. In the run-up to the international climate summit, the Egyptian president has made all kinds of efforts to establish himself as the leader of the pack.
